Hi,
I received a question on a project... they found an air shaft in a building that is defunct, it's not in use. Would it be allowed to run electrical wiring through a defunct air shaft? If so, any special requirements?

Thanks!

I agree with Roger old shafts are used for this quite a bit. Years ago we ran 4160 risers up through an old dumbwaiter shaft. The biggest issue is how the wiring will be supported if access to the shaft is limited.

Might come down to does the chase have any fire rating if it would be required in the application as well as what kind of wiring method might be used.

One example - non dwelling application, you really shouldn't be able to run NM cable in there if not at least a 15 minute finish on the chase

This is for a townhouse / residence.
