Wiring Through Concrete

I need to place a number of outlets and lights on the outside wall of a residential concrete home.

I need to drill through the concrete to feed the NM wire to the outside boxes.

Code (334.12) says wire "embedded" in concrete must be sheathed/protected, which I assume means conduit.

Code also states I can run wire in a masonary "chase" without protection.

Code does not define Embedded.

Is the wire through the wall be Embedded, or in a Chase?

Embedded means concrete being poured around the conductors. I don't see anything wrong except you are talking about a wet or at least a damp location. For that part, you need to use UF cable in the bored hole. :D

This is very common in FL . and have never been called on to use UF.If the box is attached properly to the wall i do not see it as being damp and it will have an in use cover.If this is a bell box i would suggest silicon calking between it and the block or duct seal

I'd call it a damp location just cause many of the outdoor outlets I have seen have water inside the box, regardless of the cover.

I have to go with Jim on this one.In a bored hole does not constitute damp, no UF.Just like being in a pvc cut in box in block, NM all the way.I would have to challange the AHJ that requires UF for this.

Looking at Article 100 it could be damp wet or neither. I'm used to thinking of concrete as a wet location but I guess I was wrong. :cool:

I would say anything in direct contact with concrete is a damp or wet location.

This is the reason treated lumber must be used when in contact with cement.

This is just an opinion no code to back it up. :D

BOB if that was the case then on block homes we could not run NM on the surface of block walls between the block and the drywall.Also think about all of those coach lights we hang beside garages and front doors.Would you suggest UF to them as well ?
The block walls usually are stuco and painted so really not damp.
I believe that we are dry from the block wall all the way into the bell box.If moisture got into this box then the weather proofing seals leaked
