Wiring to hot tub on deck - conduit acceptable?

I am moving my hot tub onto an existing deck. Can I run the wiring to the hot tub in rigid conduit attached to the underside of the deck? If I have to bury the UF cable, I will have to tear up the whole deck. I want to mount the GFCI about 15 feet away on a wall and run conduit under the deck to the hot tub.

Thanks

There are a host of NEC citations that apply to Hot Tubs & Spas. Most of the swimming pool codes apply to hot tubs & spas. Add on a few extra ones that are hot tub & spa specific. Then throw in some local codes. If it's a self-contained unit (or not) there may be special manufacturers requirements. It's hard to answer one question without knowing all the variables involved in your particular application.

Can you tell me what type of wire is required if it's in PVC conduit? Does it have to be UF?

Thanks.

UF is a cable assembly, and yes, it may be used because it is suitable for wet locations. If you elect to use individual conductors they will have to have a "W" on their insulation, as the code views PVC conduit as a wet location.

Ryan,

Please explain how UF cable can be used to supply a Hot Tub located outdoors.

Sorry about the post that seems to be a quote. I was trying to post a reply to Ryan. I suppose that your response implies that I can use non water resistant cable if it's in rigid metal conduit?

Thanks again.

Bill: I'm glad you mentioned that, after reading my post it does leave room for objection. My response is an answer to the question "if I run wires in PVC does it have to be UF"? I anser yes because it is permitted to use UF cable IN PVC. I should have been more clear. I am not implying that you may use UF without PVC encasing it.

Why can't UF be used to supply a hot tub? What is the code section that forbids this?

New feeder must be in RMC, IMC, LFNMC, or PVC (EMT if on or within building) per 680.25(A). This does not rule out UF, but it must be "protected". The ground (EGC) must be insulated per 680.25(B).

Other portions of Article 680 may apply to this installation including but not limited to:
680.44
680.42
680.26
680.25
680.23
680.22
680.21
680.10
680.8
