It can be at the front door, the back door, or anywhere in between and there is no requirement for three ways.

Why is it the inspector always gets blamed. I am an inspector and have "never" made up any rules. Seriously, I deal with surrounding inspectors that sometimes I think they have never opened a book. I am far from 100% versed in any code, but I try my best. Some of these arguements (discussions) I get asked on jobsites from contractors and I consider it a mental challenged to give the proper responce. One electrician even has a code quiz question every time he calls for an inspection. He gives me enough time to look it up and we talk about it at the inspection site. Kinda cool.

Why, because there are not enough inspectors like you.

I am much more impressed with an inspector that will get out his code book and look for an answer if challenged than the one that just says it is this way. If there is something a little out of the ordinary about an install you can bet I looked things up before I installed it the way I did, the least the inspector can do is look instead of assuming his instinct is right. Even if he knows he is right, he is still going to have to reference the supporting code otherwise he can not make out a proper correction notice.

I appreciate inspectors like you as well.

Too often I get an E-mail from the contractor saying the inspector said this or that. The first thing I reply is for the contractor to provide me with the written comments with code reference(s). Too often neither exists, just "what he said". Which may or may not be what he "actually" said. Or, "this is the way we do it here".

All too often one inspector will pick something to death and another will pass on an absolute mess.

This argument get's old after awhile. Electricians are human (contrary to popular belief) and they make mistakes, that's why there are inspectors. Inspectors are human, that's why there's supervisors. Supervisors are human that's why there are building officials. I don't know what buiding officials are.

Your job is to know the code the same as me. My job is to simply verify that you put it in per the code and didn't miss anything. Remember you're an EC it's your job to know how to install it. I'm an EI, it's my job to know the code. Thing is I'm an EC to, but very few electricians are certified electricial inspectors.

Now on the clarification side, I would bet that the inspectors that most of you have issues with are combo inspectors. And I'm not bagging on them because you know how big the NEC is, now try to remember what's in five books that same size, plus the energy code, plus all of the standards that we have to inspect to now.

Like I always say, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
