Have I missed something. Does this sound right. Panelboards lets say 120/208. Now 3' in front of panel but does that 3' extend 6' up from floor or to structure ceiling etc or 6' from the front of the panel.

Re: Work Space In Front of Equip.

It is actually 6.5 feet. The 30" or width of the equipment must indeed extend to 6.5 feet or the height of the equipment. See 110.26(A)(2),(3) and 110.26(E). :)

Yes that is true
but what about in front of the panel. When measuring for this panel 3 feet in front,30" wide, OK but on the 6.5 up how far out in front of the panel. I read to front of panel only not 3 feet

Re: Work Space In Front of Equip.

Another way to look at this. You had a panel Lets say 6'up from the floor. You met your 30" width but 6'5" feet in the air is a water line 2 feet in front of the panel not above. Now this inspector tells me that the 3 foot applies all the way up 6.5 or ceiling. Sound right?

Tommy:
1999 NEC - requirements for space around elec. equip divided into 2 areas:
WORKING SPACE: 110-26 which requires the 3' X 30" from platform up to 6'6" is clear except associated elec. equip can extend into this space up to 6" past the face of a panel above or below. not infront of.
DEDICATED ELECTRICAL SPACE: 30" wide min. extending out to the front of the equip(panel) from the floor to a height of 6' above the equip. or the the ceiling.

tommy,

Picture that someone has to be able to stand in front of the panel. It's working space, not dedicated equipment space.

An easy way to visualize the working space is to imagine a refrigerator box (WOW, they used to have a wooden frame and made a great fort . . .) sitting in front of the panelboard. That is close to the room needed to work.
