Work Space Question

We have a new facility that has a 1200AMP/480VAC/3PH service.
The new switchgear is located inside the building along a wall. We need access to "Pull A Pump" through an opening in the floor. This opening is in the designated work space of the Switch Gear with removable floor grating. When the pump is being pulled, the floor grating is removed and gaurd rails are installed in sleeves in the floor.
Question:
Since the removable gaurd rails are only installed when the pump is being pulled, is this okay?

Re: Work Space Question

In my opinion, that would be the call of the AHJ. I don't see anything wrong with it, others may disagree. :D

Re: Work Space Question

I agree with Charlie. I also would post a written policy before you ask the AHJ to make a decision, that would state when the grate is removed and the pump is being worked on, no work shall take place on the switch gear. You know your facility and your AHJ. You should be able to get him to sign off on a policy like this.

Re: Work Space Question

I talked to the AHJ today.
Everything is fine as is.
He also said a sign is not needed.
Just thought I would let you know the outcome.

Re: Work Space Question

That1s the way an AHJ should act ( REASONABLE )
:D Only wish he was in this jurisdiction ;)
