Not for decades, but the Schaum's Outline Series is great for worked-out problems. I don't know if they've changed over the years, but from the questions asked on this Forum, I thought it would be helpful.
The Outline books assume the reader has some knowledge of the subject, and they step you through the nitty-gritty of the calculations. It's a good sanity check.
Books like this, in general, might be becoming obsolete what with all the expert software out there, but I'd still rather do the calc. myself so I understand it. And, with spreadsheets, it's easy.
One other thing on computer design/expert systems/Artificial Intelligence.
Back in the old days, people weren't so sure of themselves so they put in several safety factors. Computers are very sure of themselves so they design to the nearest millimeter.
Problem is, if there is a failure, it cascades through the whole system, whereas the uncertain and anxious humans were so conservative that with their designs the failures tended to not propagate.
