Sometimes having other trades around is helpful when trying to coordinate installing equipment but usually I like to be the only contractor in any given location.

I dont like tripping over other folks junk, I like a clean slate, and turn me loose so I can rock and roll....I tend to go it like Im fight'n snakes, and working around obstacles dis-tracts me.......

Don't work alone...

Don't work alone...

If you mean work without other trades, ok fine.

I don't (and won't let anyone under me) work alone except in a few very specific conditions... No ladders or lifts, no attic or crawl spaces, no exposed live equipment. That's not say there has to be 2 people doing the work, there just has to be someone else there to call 911.

there is nothing more peaceful than working by yourself, its my favorite thing. of course, its often not wise nor safe in this trade.

As a service electrician, I work alone everyday (definitely my preference, I hate babysitting) and I deal with all of the above regularly (except for attics, no resi for me!)

U guys like having a job all to yourself? Sometimes its good, esp. if compared to working with lots of other trades.

tomorrow, i've got the day scheduled for work, for a couple reasons....
one of which was i screwed off friday.... :D

the hardest thing is being at work on a sunny sunday, and you've got
12 hours alone, with nobody to play with. it's not much fun. but jill's
gotta database to whip into line, so she has to work, so i'm gonna go
work as well...

as for other trades being around, it depends... all i need is a laborer
sweeping up in a closed building, making tons of dust, and when you
ask him to stop, he pretends not to understand english.... and he has
no sweeping compound for dust control, and is too dumb to care anyway.
it's harder for him to make dust without a broom handle.:D

having a toolie to work with, and an uncluttered and uncrowded work area
is ideal.

Next time they go no obla on you, get out your water bottle or find a can and a rag and sprinkle it right in front of their feet, and don't be sparing. It'll make a big difference next time one gets into that situation... I've done it several times for the worker and then I'll just go some place else, Period!

Dust on the job should be a major concern and for all involved. It's frankly a hangover of my first employee hand book that stated that we are not required to be subjected to anything like a dust cloud!

I like it best when there are no other crafts . We can consentrate on our work,
without all of the distractions. and we can get a lot more done.
Not that i don't enjoy the other peoples company. But things usually go smoother.

I do my work alone 90% or more of the time. Ocassionally there may be another trade in the way but rarely do I have a helper any more. I think HVAC guys are the worst because they just tend to bring in bags of duct and boxes of collars and throw them on the floor before the minimal two hour bull session on what they want to do. Carpenters just make a lot of dust and noise. They also tend to be the most verbal of the trades, always yelling back and forth.
Service work is almost always a one man job. Which I hate because I could do the jobs faster with a helper most of the time and save the customer some money overall.

Many moons ago, I had a large job that was just 3 blocks from my house. I secured a key to the building from the GC, and I showed up at 5AM. I got more done between 5 and 7 than the rest of the day.

I don't mind working when other trades are on site. I have been around long enough I know most of them, their parents or grandparents. Nice to BS a bit. Some jobs just require no interuption and other than my crew I don't want anyone else around. Some days not even them and they can say the same about me.

I work alone a lot. The last few years I've been concerned about getting hurt on the job and not having someone around to assist.

feel the same. I try to have someone around when I'm doing stuff that's not condoned by the forum (hot work). (not so much to save me, but just so they can tell someone and at least chuck my carcass outside so the buzzards and raccoons can get a free meal on me)

I did a house right next door to mine and I too would get more done in those first two hours than I got done in rest of the day!!

If I am doing a house I like to meet with the builder/trades to go over details and mark locations out etc...then if at all possible I tell the builder I prefer to go last, thinks seem to get done much quicker without all the mechanical trades fighting over space.
