Have you been asked to add an electrical load, and hit load calculation requirements that mandated an otherwise unneeded panel upgrade? Looked at load calculations for a new building and wondered if they were appropriate? Or faced a multiple month delay for a capacity bump from your POCO?

The Panel Optimization Work and Electrical Reassessments POWER group is working with various data sets, and various technologies for reducing load peaks. Then seeing that through to electric codes, in particular capacity calculations at the building code level and POCO level.

Some of this is driven by electrification goals. Some is driven by just pure upgrades, such as to induction stoves or other technology updates. A recent policy brief resulted in part from the group's work:

Solving the Panel Puzzle
Switching home energy uses from fossil fuels to electricity will improve air quality and meet state climate goals. But California’s plan to decarbonize its buildings is getting bogged down by the complexities and costs of electric panel and service upgrades. SPUR suggests three strategies and 17...
