Working space clearance in 1976

Was it a requirement to have 36" working space clearance in front of electrical equipment?
And if you have the code book, I would really appreciate a copy of the section.

The 1975 NEC had requirements similar to the current 2020 version but different distances. In 1975 it was section 110.16(a) which had for:
0-150 volts: condition 1 and 2: distance of 2.5' and condition 3: 3'.
For 151-600 volts was condition 1: 2.5', condition 2: 3.5', condition 3: 4'.
