in further understanding 110.26 nec. i am mounting a single phase load center to the exterior wall in a commercial building, there is a joining dry wall to my left and a gas furnace to my right with a max of 32" between the furnace and wall with plenty of depth space, would i be in violation of the 30" rule if i were to mount it in that space. (panel approx 14" wide) I was told by a AHJ that the 30" rule applied by measuring from the side of the panel to the furnace. i am confused because exhibit 110.18 of the 02 shows different. thanks for any info you can give as i am a new member here.

Re: working space for service panel

I believe your inspector is in the wrong in this case. By virtue of the "width of equipment or 30", whichever is greater" statement, it really puts a hole in measuring from the edge of the equipment to determine the clearance. (Especially when you take the 90? door swing part into the picture.)

I don't have a handbook, but based on the text of the NEC, you're compliant. ;)

Re: working space for service panel

IMO The inspector is mistaken.

You need 30" wide period.

That can be centered on the panel or off to one side.

You can install a 30" wide panel in a 30" wide space and still comply with 110.26

Re: working space for service panel

Read the code section and see if you see anything that says the measurement is from each side of the panel.

110.26(A)(2) Width of Working Space. The width of the working space in front of the electric equipment shall be the width of the equipment or 750 mm (30 in.), whichever is greater. In all cases, the work space shall permit at least a 90 degree opening of equipment doors or hinged panels.

Re: working space for service panel

the working space in front of the equiptment is the key , it can be from center or from either edge,as long as the door can open 90 degree`s
A few years ago was called by the AHJ,600 amp K based meter back to backed through a trough that there was not working clearance if 1 of the panels doors was open :D
