Working Space

I have an electric room that has a 1200A panel that measures 6'-4" along with other panels and equipment. I have been able to double the working distance for the 1200A panel so I could just use one entrance door. Do you have to double the working distance for all of the other pieces of equipment or just the 1200A panel?

Thanks!

Re: Working Space

I just looked into reducing this 1200A panel to one section using J-Fuses rather than R-Fuses and the one section is only 38" wide rather than having a 76" two-section panel. So am I correct to assume that I can ignore the access and entrace requirement for equipment 1200A and over 6ft wide?
Also, has anyone had a similiar situation using J-Fuses for panel size reduction, if so, is this a good solution?

Hope I make sense. Thanks

Yes, but you better get it done soon. The 6 foot wide part has been removed from the 2005 version of the NEC.

Re: Working Space

You're right. I thought the 6ft requirement was a little grey, because what if your equipment measures 5'-11", it would pass under code but the code exists for many reasons (one is safety) and a panel just under 6'-0" isn't any more protected against arcing.
That is interesting, I might set the room up so it meets that requirement because of that fact just in case it catches any grief later - even though where I'm working they are still working under the 99 code.

Thanks for pointing that out.
