Worth the price difference?

GE may be a 'spec' fixture for some jobs. They have always been higher cost then other 'known' brands.

If the optics are close, and your client isn't name conscious, save the $$$

The GE version is also electrocoated, which usually means an epoxy powder coating and is an extremely tolerant coating system, especially for aluminum. The other one just says "painted". You can probably expect the painted one to look like crap in short order.

So it boils down to GE having a better housing? Name isn't an issue, just fixture quality. If GE i9s that much better Id go with GE but if it sonly a bit better AEL is the way to go. And as I understand Cobras aren't the best fixtures to start with in terms of quality.

What prices are displaying for you - it may depend if you have an account with them.

when I opened those pages the price difference was only $106.

Still Grainger is not always best pricing but are pretty reliable with stock - so you need to consider that as well sometimes.

We have tried other fixture manufacturers--but always seem to wind up back with GE--120 or so years ago GE said--"let's build a great light" and they have--then they said "Let's screw everything else up" and they have!!:ashamed:

I'm just not a fan of GE--Prefer Siemens, SQ D, Cutler Hammer and even the old Westinghouse stuff--Just personal preference

Which make me wonder. The AEL is a high power factor reactor ballast while the GE is lower power factor. More signs point to AEL being better but that price difference makes me wonder if the housing is better built.

How are the ballasts in GE equipment? Any experience with AEL lighting? The old lights are Cooper OVX, which have held up well, but were quality by all means.

That is what the mentioned list price difference was on my page - but when I opened the links it opened the page with me logged into my grainger account as it does remember me on this computer and automatically logs me in. It said my cost was 210.76 for one and 104.16 on the other.

Does GE still use proprietary ballasts of their own manufacture?

Good questions. All of the AEL cobra I have seen have a ballast that say "AEL ballast" (I believe subbed out to Advance Phillips) while GE have a ballast labelled "general electric" They are different from the individual replacements for everyday HIDs with open igniter, typical of Cobras for some reason.
