Would you do this?

If you find a hole cut in a 1 hour firewall and you need to add a cable through that wall would you have a problem using that hole if you notify the building Manager of the hole before you use it, they acknowledge it as a problem and they state they will be patching it. They allow you pass your cable through it, prior to patching, sealing it. I would not be there when it's getting patched.

If you are running new cable that means you need a permit so the inspector will check to see if the hole is patched.

But if I was running just one cable I would drill a small hole and fire caulk it. That way you know it will pass inspection. I don't trust other people.

No permit required for LV in this jursidiction. And if there was an inspection they don't inspect above ceilings on existing installs for such a small add here. I'm sure this will spur some side discussion, please don't bother. I'm not here to discuss the merits of the inspection process, that's another thread.

OK so no inspection, that's OK we me. In that case I would still drill a small hole run my cable and fire caulk. That way when I leave I know my job was done right, I'm not responsible for the rest of the building just what I do.

The reason to caulk it myself is that's the fastest and easiest way to do it.

Yeah, they'll be patching that hole....I've heard that before. If I already had the fire caulk, I'd just create my own penetration and be done with it.

If you run the cable, you need to fire stop the hole it is using, just to cover your liability, just because there is no inspection of permits required, it does overlook that you were last mechanic working on the job.
