need help solving an argument : here is the install we are looking to do= Take a 480 volt primary from a 100 amp breaker to the xmer and then 20 feet on the secondary 120/208 volt to a 200 amp main breaker panel. Some guys are saying that we cant do this because its over 10 feet !!!! on the secondary.

can you please give articles that support your answer I think its some where in 240?

the project i am on has been going on for over 2 years now and we are still using the 2008 code even though last year we adopted the 2011.

For supervised industrial installations there are some variances from the standard rules. See 240 Part VIII if applicable.

Dave --240.21c is where i think this application is fine because the line states WITHOUT OVERCURRENT PROTECTION AT THE SECONDARY, the main in the panel is the overcurrent protection so the 10' stuff does not apply.

augie- i did not mention this is a hospital, I dont know if that applies. they do have a full time maintenance staff 1st and 2nd shift. however none of them are electricians.

read closer,,, unless its a delta-delta or two-wire-two wire in most cases your are limited by the 10ft secondary rule.
