I did search for an answer here , but didn't find what I'm looking for .
What is the straight poop on grounding a PORTABLE generator . Is it nescessary to ground the frame to the ground rod of the home ? I'm talking about temporary use after a storm , etc . No ATS , just extension cords .
Is it required by code , and is there any advantage to it ?

Look at 250.34(A). I to say no.

The section basically says that if the genny is only supplying cord connected loads plugged into the genny, no GES is required.

Thanks . I read today ( another forum ) that a ground was nescessary to prevent " backfeed " that would damage electronics .

This is from article 250.34.

250.34 Portable and Vehicle-Mounted Generators.
(A) Portable Generators. The frame of a portable generator shall not be required to be connected to a grounding electrode as defined in 250.52 for a system supplied by the generator under the following conditions:
(1) The generator supplies only equipment mounted on the generator, cord-and-plug-connected equipment through receptacles mounted on the generator, or both, and
(2) The normally non?current-carrying metal parts of equipment and the equipment grounding conductor terminals of the receptacles are connected to the generator frame.
