This is a question I have in my head concerning another worker. Apparently there was this breaker they had tried to open and could not. It seems to have 'malfunctioned'.

They would like to try to 'open' it again because of some circuits/shutdown work that needs to be done. All I can say is does he LIKE living dangerously?? I would just have that breaker replaced or pulled, because there is no reason for it not to be able to open, other than its been 'sitting' there probably before I was born!

I dont think it would 'blow up' but why take chances, he alread has a plan to open the breaker feeding the bad one, just do that and replace that doggone bad breaker!!

What do you think??

I replaced a 400A 3/0 Sq.D breaker a few years ago that would not open. After getting it replaced (after having to disassemble half the bussing in the panel to get it out) I noticed a little button on the face, about 1/4 inch, when I pushed it the breaker tripped and then operated freely. It was where the shunt trip mechanism would push, if it had one.
It was one of those situations where I couldn't risk pushing the button without having a back up ready to install and a mantainance window to do it. So after buying the replacement breaker (not cheap) it was getting changed no matter what. :D

Square D must have had an issue with those breakers, a couple of years back, a tornado went through Macon,Ga. One of my techs was to hook up a temporary generator to a drug store, and could not get the main to open. I had him push the test button to get it to trip. We replaced that one, as that would not be good if it happened again.
