I was finishing up a new residential detatched garage, ready to start installing the outside fixtures where they used siding blocks that were J-channeled around. I see about 7/8" from sheeting to finished edge of the siding block & decided I would need 1/2" pan plate w/backer OR I hear they make a 3/4" pan?
OR ... The HO shows me some single gang plastic boxes w/ brackets (the really shallow ones 1" - which is too much, & I showed him.) HO says he'll chop them down on a saw to take a 1/4 off!!! I said to him "... fooling around to get the box to fit + the cubic inch capacity of the box wasn't enough. I told him that if I have to start modifying the box to get things to fit that's when I stop to get the correct size/ depth of the box.
HO doesn't listen, tries chopping it on his miter saw! I just turned away & sure enough he's holding onto the box & bringing down his saw, & ... the box came flying out of his hand, the saw grabbed it & broke the box all up! Luckily he didn't get hurt. Then he turns and says to me, so that's when you just get the right size box, huh?
Moral of the story (...that was just the punchline) is that when you let HO's provide material this is what you can get! I SHOULD have looked right away at those & told him the CU's weren't enough anyway (2 12-2 romexs), Just a bit of pain everytime explaining to the HO's why what they have can't be used...

Yes it is funny, that a contractor would let someone supply material, I guess if he had auto repair shop he would let the customers bring in their own parts, anytime you let someone supply material, you can expect problems.

Right here.

In this case, by humoring the homeowner a little bit, he completely removed that suggestion for the rest of the job.

Why not? And be sure to ask if you can put your car up on the lift yourself, and and the mechanic if it's OK to use the tools in his SnapOn chest. Oh, and make sure you know where the compressed air is, as well as the grease gun.....

Well, that it's for me then. Last time I let that happen... I've got two small jobs going with this set-up & I will not do it again. Maybe I should have known already, Hey I've learned. This is will be my 3rd full year in business, and only a few times have I let the HO supply material. AND after reading these (and A LOT of other posts) that I see my folly. Thanks guys.

Count your blessings. You have learned a valuable lesson from the school of hard knocks at a relatively low tuition. I have learned several things the hard way and took out school of hard knocks loan, so to speak.
