Re: Zapped

I prefer the Fox version broadcast on Cops. Nothing as entertaining to watch as a good Tazin!

Re: Zapped

"conducting experiments" Is that a play on words?

I have read a few research papers on "shock" experiments. Apparently some of the studies are what has lead to the magically 4 to 6 mA range for GFCI devices.

I just completed building a 9,000 volt Jacob's Ladder this week. Perhaps I should perform a few experiments with my neighbors cat. ;)

Re: Zapped

I did one with 28,000 volts eons ago. I could barely get mine to work though. I think I've leaned what the problem was since but I foget what it was. :(

Re: Zapped

Ages ago, I built a 16KV converter for night vision goggles. I would charge myself up through 1 megohm, then walk around in my Hush Puppies then touch someone's earlobe. Made a lot of friends that way.

Re: Zapped

George,

I saw that last night,I liked the part with the kite and the metal line to it,who knew there was so much electricty in thin air? Makes you want to start building something, don't it.

Re: Zapped

Sam, you can get KiloVolts by sliding across upholstery or dragging your feet on carpet.

MOS circuits utilize a very thin layer of oxide which can be ruptured by a few hundred volts. That is the reason for wrist straps.

Re: Zapped

I don't care. Two neon transformers, one driving the next, with no current limiting ;)

Edit: I had the transformers connecte wrong.

Re: Zapped

I wasn't sure if it would hold up at the time either but they worked just fine. I got like four of 'em free and really had no use for them so I didn't care if one failed, or exploded. Ok, I didn't want any explosions.

They were pretty industrial. I don't remember what the specs were. Just that figuring the ratios came out to 28k.

Re: Zapped

One of Nikola Tesla's favorite stage tricks was to stand on a metal plate that was energized with a few 100,000 or even a million volts of radio frequency power. He would then hold up hollow glass globes with very lowe pressure argon, helium, or neon in them to show that electrical energy was really passing through his body. A very good demonstration that the current level is what kills you.

I have also seen someone hook himself up to a Van deGraff generator and make his hair stand on end. As long as he did not complete a circuit he was OK.
