It's got to do with integrity and conscience versus speed and money.

I like money, but not at the expense of my integrity and conscience.

Can't pick and choose when NEC applies.

Not saying I adhere perfectly. But I don't disregard it purposefully.

In reality it is probably safer without the staples.

It's much safer unstapled. Think of how much traffic an attic sees over the years. When it's stapled, it's more likely to damage the wire. When it's loose, you can walk all over it and it'll be fine.

Regardless of code, your conscience or a silly argument about what's better - if none of the inspectors are enforcing it, who's gonna do it?

I disagree with that. If you step on the cable it will be on the joist and there is no difference stapled or not. You will be doing damage to the cable over time. Of course the reality is there usually isn't much activity in the attic so it probably won't get damaged.

I bet if you wrote a proposal the cmp would not accept it. It's code and we try to comply whenever possible- we are not perfect I am sure but we try. I am sure there are times when the guys are not interested in crawling to the edge and stapling and I agree- is it really necessary when you have just a foot of height.
