Tell me where the gap is if your using 5/8 ring on 1/2 inch drywall. You have a 1/8 gap on one side or the other.

There's no gap. In this scenario the outlet box, wiring and device are completely sealed after the plate is installed. If the ring is set back 1/8" there's still a gap after trim out.

Yes, the gap is between the ring and back side of drywall but never the less its a gap. And after enough use the screws might work there way into the drywall and now your outlet is not tight to the drywall. Only reason you needed the 5/8 was because drywall men do not make notches for the screws.
