I would doubt that pipe dope would give you that tight of a seal. I think you would need to switch the conduit couplings with plumbing pipe couplings to do that.

I agree. I have been in a situation where I needed a plb coupling and only had a conduit coupling. Best I could do was slow it to a drip until I could get pipe coupling. It was under pressure of 40 psi.
