Say, does this listing buisiness mean my old method of screwing a cut length of 2x4 lumber to the studs behind the box and then screw mounting the box to the stud backing not meet code?

For me it's very unclear where, if anywhere the line is between something's listing and accepted practice. In some cases it's fairly obvious but in others I have no idea at all.

In the example you bring up I don't see how, say a boxes listing, would apply. A stud wall isn't listed. Is a particular box listed for use only when attached to a specific stud wall configuration? Maybe. But I doubt it.

I've said before that I don't even know where to find a lot of these listings. Some of the stuff I see posted here I can't find on manufacturer documentation. I know I'm gonna catch it for this but I don't put as much faith in outfits like UL that some other folks do either. I've seen some real bad stuff with UL stamped on it.
