Play along. I just invented a high bay fixture that can be controlled by a normal incandescent dimmer. (Hey, some compact fluorescents are dimmable with normal dimmers now.)

So ... :D ... is it legal?

There are 'dimmers' made specifically for dimming HID hi bays.

The ones I have seen are the size of a refrigerator and controlled a few hundred High bays.

The HIDs did not happen to be cord and plug connected but I could see it happening in a different type of occupancy.

I doubt anyone would give it much thought.

The latest dimming Hi bays we have done only have low and high settings and they are controlled with a relay not a dimmer.

How about this question. :?:

Can you 'dim' a whole panel?

I ask only because that is how the large units I saw worked.

480Y/277 200 amp input to the dimmer and the output fed three 200 amp 480Y/277 panels which in turn fed the lighting circuits.

That is really cool. 8)

It was ...... if only I knew how it worked and what it changed.

No electronics just motors, big rheostats, transformer looking things, maybe some large capicitors......I really did not know how it worked only that it did.
