Come on down to Florida and get yourself a snoot full of sulfur water. Smells like rotten eggs and tastes like s$#%. Gives of a gas the turns copper and silver black. It likes brass also.

Unlike hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide is acutely toxic. My high school Chem teacher, when asked what sulfur dioxide smells like, answered:
"It smells like your chest has been run over by a truck."

They both are highly toxic. The OSHA PEL for hydrogen sulfide is 10 ppm and it is 5 ppm for sulfur dioxide.

What I should have said is that you can smell hydrogen sulfide at levels well below the toxic level, while with sulfur dioxide the two levels are much closer.
