Are indoor damp location receptacles required to be GFCI rated?
Per Article 406.8 [ 2008 NEC ], they are required to weather
resistant...

I have an indoor Locker Room with an ADA shower in it. There
is one receptacle shown in the room. Does this receptacle have
to GFCI rated? The receptacle is not within 6 ft. of the shower
head. Articles references "yes" or "no". Thanks! :-?

NS makes a rare trip over to the dark side!

It can't be in the shower space (406.8(C)). If its outside I see nothing in 210.8 that would require GFCI protection. Sounds like poor design.

What code cycle are you working under?

The 2011 now has added GFCI requirements for locker rooms with associated showering facilities, check out 210.8(B)(7).

Chris,

Yes, sometimes I visit other worlds to explore their culture, and to seek out
knowledge from their wise leaders! I am under the 2008 NEC !
Thanks for your expedient response! In my world, ...speed is a good thing!

Jim W in Tampa,

I am referring to the definition of a "damp location" in Article 100 [ `08 NEC ]:

" ...and interior locations subject to moderate degrees of moisture".
There is going to be an ADA shower installed in the Locker Room. I do not know
why the RDP put a receptacle in there, but he did. Hence, the reason for my
question.

Sorry ,guess i read over that detail. I would think that changes the use locker to shower room. As far as does this include all of the locker room would be up to AHJ. I would either remove outlet or put in GFI just as added safety. We are not talking major money.

Jim W in Tampa,

Can you please cite the code section that would require the GFCI rated receptacle?
I agree that it is a good idea and good common sense, but as the AHJ, I would have
to cite the proper justification, ...either in the NEC or in one of the other I-codes.
Currently, the only thing that I can ' REQUIRE ', per Article 406.8, is that the
receptacle be the weather resistant type and that it have a weather-proof cover
plate installed on it. We are on the 2006 I-Codes and the `08 NEC. Thanks!

Code wise you would need to first call the room or area a bathroom. Will assume it lacks enough to call it a bathroom.Does the area include a basin ? Note that code says AREA. If it does then call it a bathroom. Was the added shower permitted ? As the inspector your in a rough spot if it is called locker room. Assume you feel like me in that this is unsafe. If you can't get the EC to put it in then document this for future. If someday there is a death you covered yourself. Its simply another case where NEC did not cover this install.

Jim W,

I cannot ' REQUIRE ' that the space / room / area be called anything. It would be
up to the RDP to assign a name / "functional use of the space".
That said though, ...the current plans do not meet the definition of a bathroom as
provide in the NEC, or the IPC. Nor is it an "occupiable space" according to the IBC.
The ADA shower is not even required because of the Occupant Load. The shower
is a "courtesy feature" to the customers of this A-3 facility.

As always, "thanks" for your input! :)

Then you simply sign it off. If you suggested they install one then you did more than your job. I am sure you see plenty of work that you don't care for but legal. Perhaps a local code is needed but for now nothing you can do. I see violations all the time and if its a friends house I point it out but not much else i can do. Few weeks ago seen a hot tub that actually had indoor x mas lights wraped around it. His defence is nobody is touching them. We can only do so much. That is one tub i will not get in.
