Sump pump receptacle in the pit

I would like to again thank every one who responded. Your information was very helpful. I guess that he will be putting the receptacle in the pit. Unless I can talk him out of it.

After the sump pump fails and he has to replace the GFCI receptacle (if thats what he uses) a few times he'll wish it was mounted higher.

On another note it the pump fails and water covers the receptacle then what. Live wires submerged in water, not so good. Maybe the wires going to the pit should be GFCI protected from above.

I agree it's allowed it's just that common sense thing creeping back in. The one that has no place in the NEC.
