Here's a problem I once came upon many presidents ago:

200a 1-ph resi panel. HO complained about dim lights and ceiling fans running slow. I immediately suspected an open neutral in the service, so I opened the panel and took some voltage readings.

On the main lines coming in, I had 242.3V L1-L2.
L1 to ground, 121.5
L2 to ground, 121.3.

So far so good.

But these are the voltages to ground I found in the rest of the panel:

All neutral connections were solid and tight in the neutral bar. 2-pole breakers are highlighted in green. Readings are taken between the breaker terminal and ground.

Anyone wanna take a stab at what I found?

missing hot leg, backfeeding through the 2 pole breakers.
your a genius. ever see this before? i had that problem on a panel before. the light would flicker a little bit and had weird voltage readings in the panel. turns out the problem was the insulating piercing connector someone used to connect the service at the top

No, had good, consistent voltage at the main breaker.

Someone reuse a 3 phase panel?

No, it only had two terminals for the mains coming in.

Fluke 87, never had a problem since I got it in '93.

neat . Split bus, eh?
No, it was about a 5-year old SD QO panel.

Some good guesses here, though!

CRS strikes again

CRS strikes again

I've had this problem in the last couple of years. But after fifteen minutes of trying to remember how I solved it I still can't remember. CRS strikes again.
