I was looking at a brand new 09 GMC Savana 1500, with a 4.3L V-6. Now I was talking to the salesman and I can get, $3,500 from the cash for clunkers program, plus $2,000 off from the employee price program, plus he'll throw in a Adrian Steel bin package worth $2,400. Plus free oil changes for life. Plus a lifetime powertrain warranty. So the final price before tax, ect. will be $18,000. Now for like $2,000 more I can get the V-8. So my questions are:

1.Should I get the V-8 or the V-6, and why.

2.Does this sound like a good deal to you?

3.Anyone have this brand, and do you like it?

Thank you.

Do you carry a lot of cargo? A 1500 is 1/2 ton might want to opt for a 2500 series still sounds like a pretty good deal.

good deal, but........

good deal, but........

what type of electrical do you mainly perform? Keep in mind that the 1500 is 1/2 ton. Add up the weight of your shelving, bulkhead, racks, ladders, bins, wire, tools, stock parts, etc, etc, etc.

I know I carry too much weight on a daily basis for a 1500.

good luck

Are you in the flatter part of CA or the hills. I have a 2000 GMC Safari stretch with the same size V-6 it does great around town and on the occasional hill. But I would not want to have to drive it in the mountains a lot. But I do get about 19 to the gallon with it even with 200,000 + miles. By the way I only carry my personal gang box in this one so it's not a whole lot of weight. I think it weighs more when I put the seats back in to take my guys on a trip to the casino's or the dog track.

What is the dealer discounting from the price. :-?

The cash for clunkers is a govt rebate to the dealer.
the employee pricing is a rebate to the dealer from the factory.

In essence the dealer is selling the vehicle at full sticker!

I agree with the others about the 1500. Too much weight on board. Go with at least the 2500

Thanks, mainly residential. That's one thing I wasn't sure on either, 1500 or 2500. My van now is a 2500.

Hmm, maybe I can talk him down more then. He said it was already $600 under invoice. So I don't know. My first time buying new from a dealer.

If you carry around a normal truck stock (wire, boxes, devices, breakers,e tc), you'll never keep up with fixing the brakes on a ?-ton van.

A car salesman telling you he's selling you a brand-spanking new van for 600 bucks less than the dealer paid for it.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

Under invoice before the rebates? That is the key. They are getting this money from other parties. If they don't offer a discount from the listed price of the vehicle before rebates are applied then they sell the vehicle at full price. Good for them, bad for you.

The bin package is also a factory to dealer incentive. The cost of this does not come out of the dealers pocket.

When I bought my 03 3500 Express it was cheaper to get the 3500 that was standard with the 8 cylinder and larger brakes than it was to get the 2500 and pay the upgrade fee for the 8 cylinder.

I would get another one.

New Van

New Van

I have a 1/2 ton Savanna V8 . By time you add up weight of storage bins , ladders, materials, tools, etc. The van is to light. I have 98,000 miles 0n mine. I have had brakes put on at least four times and about 4 sets of tires, new transmission, radiator, water pump, fuel pump, oil pump and now the motor bearings have oil leaking past them. I was quoted $6,500 to replace engine. I believe that a lot of the problems were from having the van severly
overloaded. Mine is a 1996. I am not going to have the motor replaced. As others have said I would get a minimum 3/4 ton preferably a 1 ton.

2.Does this sound like a good deal to you? Yes - my 03' 2500 cost me $23k

3.Anyone have this brand, and do you like it? Yep - however - I would start looking at a sprinter at this point - for the hieght. I assume a simular deal may exist.

Thank you.
Yep.........

I don't know if you can get a 3/4 ton on the CARS program. We are trading in two 3/4 ton trucks and all they will let us have are 1/2 ton pickups or small vehicles on the CARS program.

Thank you for all the advice, looks like I need to go with the 2500 instead. Sprinter van, huh? I'll have to look into those.

Years ago I did work for a medical supply company and we used Sprinter vans. Those babies could turn on a DIME and with the turbo diesel had plenty of power to boot! :-D

If I recall had decent gas mileage being fully loaded with medical stuff... (we're talking 6 hospital grade bed, oxygen etc etc)

Only thing thou... with the ceiling height... we had three different models.

One you had to duck down like a normal van
Other was VERY high to where you could stand upright the entire time.
The last one however... had two beams in the middle of the van that dipped lower than the ceiling... I banged my head at least once a week on the damn thing >.<

Good luck on the vehicle hunt!
