I want a new van...man!

Zappy,

Although my experience is a little dated, I started out with a 1/2 ton and within two years lost the ball joints. . . That lead me to weigh the thing, and I realized I was running at about 9000 pounds curb weight.

Take your current vehicle to a public scale.

I upgraded to a 1 ton and am still trying to wear it out. I chose the smallest engine I could get, cause I drive in an area that has, at worst, rolling hills.

I would agree that it might be better to have more than you need a 2500 with the V-8, but it doesn't sound like a bad deal.

My daughter just bought a 2010 Fusion, not loaded by any means and got $4500 for her clunker and because our family has bought 6 or 7 cars from them and we know some important people there  she paid $300 over invoice, out the door was still $21,000.

I told the salesman I want a 2500, he said with tax, lic., reg. it would be like $22,000. I found out on the news today, that there suspending the cash for clunkers program for some reason?

"Ends in two hours" the report just said. . . There'll be a lot more news about this one. . .

A car salesman telling you he's selling you a brand-spanking new van for 600 bucks less than the dealer paid for it.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!
Bought a Volvo for $500 under invoice last year right about when car sales crashed... Asked a simple question - "Wanna sell it or not?" Which turned out to be a very reluctant yes.

At the same time there was a place a little north of here where you could get 2 for 1, fleet F-150s and rangers. I know a few who when up for the deal - turned out they had previously ordered for next/this year and it was costing more than the sales to store them when sales stopped cold. Pay to store until they sold, or shoot for a REALLY good deal and drag in sales from deep space. From what I understand they cleared out....

Well.....I vote to get the biggest baddest meanest truck availiable......

Remember....A heavy truck can do the job of a light one....but a light one cant usually do the job of a heavy one.....

Your tools and equipment will weigh more than you think. My service trucks are F-350 dually w/ enclosed utility beds, 7.3 Powerstroke deisel, 5 speed manual....I can drag around pretty much wantever I want.....

fuel $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

3/4 ton minimum, 1 ton if you can do it. Besides being tagged to carry more weight you get better brakes, better cooling, larger axles etc.

I only get 1-ton vans (I had a 97 GMC and currently have a 2001 and 2007 Chevy). Never had to change the brakes, never had any problems. Tag them at 10,000 lbs and roll along. I do run around loaded to about 9,000 GVW. That's overloaded for a 3/4 ton and way overloaded for a 1/2 ton.

I don't know if you can get a 3/4 ton on the CARS program. We are trading in two 3/4 ton trucks and all they will let us have are 1/2 ton pickups or small vehicles on the CARS program.

I found this information. It looks like many of the work trucks out there would qualify.

Light-Duty Truck under 6,000 lbs -
New truck min fuel econimy 18 mpg
$3500 For mileage improvement of at least 2 mpg
$4500 For Mileage improvement of at least 5 mpg

Large Light-Duty Trucks 6,000 - 8,500 lbs -
New truck min fuel econimy 15 mpg
$3500 For mileage improvement of at least 1 mpg or trade-in of a work truck
$4500 For mleage improvement of at least 2 mpg

Commercial trucks 8,500 - 10,000 lbs-
$3500 Trade-in must be at least pre-2002

Fuel econimy is EPA combined.

Cash for clunkers in back in gear through September. 3/4 ton V8 is a min unless your cousin Vinny is a good auto machanic.

I did trade in a 96 Chevy with 332,000 miles Friday. The truck was running but really how much longer could you expect it to go before major repair expense? It had several " war wounds" from the days of battle as well, along with hail dents, scratches you can get it. I do not think we could have gotten $800 to $1000 from a private buyer. GM gave is $3500.00.

If you go to Chevy's website they tell you what you can get. There is not a 3/4 ton on the list or we would have gotten one. Instead we got a 1/2 ton exended cab, long bed.

There are alot of people that are upset with this program. I agree this should not be put on the taxpayers. But as a business owner this was a no brainer for us to take it. The repair bills alone could have easily topped the $3500 in not time with this vehicle. They will get their taxes back this year believe me.

I say they threw trillions of dollars at the banks. They threw 3 billion dollars at the average Joe or Jane ( sorry you guys and girls if you name is Joe or Jane, this is just a hypothetical name here) and it does help the common taxpayer a little, plus a little boost on the economy.

I say use the program if you can justify the expense.
