Can I use sheet metal screws to put a panel cover on?

I'd say it is fine as long as you use one machine screw for bonding purposes. ;)

Only a screw listed for the purpose. They can be purchased seperatley.

However, it has been widely excepted to use a machine screw with the sharp tip cut off by your side cutters.
 
Often the factory screws are missing on the deadfront, Usually on resi panels, green grounding screws fit nicely. I have a ton of the factory squareD panel cover screws, so If I feel like going to the truck, I use them.

Isnt the code silent on this issue???

I've actually never read the instructions on installing the cover. Does it actually state "Use the manufacturer-supplied, listed fasenting devices to secure the cover"?
 
What I don't see in the poll is the option of "I can use anything I want. It's a matter of what I should use." choice.

You do not see it because that is not what I wanted to know. :)

My question is what screws are we allowed to use by the NEC, not what screws does 480 feel we should use.
