I am pricing out a house and the g.c. wants me to plan for a 400amp service. What would you guys use to tie the meter to the panel? Was going to use SER cable for a 200 amp but not sure with 400 amp.
Rob is hiinting you in the right direction.
Under 05' the 42 circuit rule is in effect, so I would use (2) 200's.
Under 08' you could use one big panel if you choose.

Under the 08 two 42 circuit panels are usually more than enough. I don't get where you are going with this. I think rob was getting at the service conductor size.
We need to KNow if he's feedind one panel or two,,,it's as simple as that. I'm not going anywhere with it.
And 42 are not always enough.I just did a house with a 400 amp base feeding (2) 200 amp service panels, feeding (2) 200 subpanels, (2) 100 subpanels,and (2) 50's throughout the house.
I was simply telling him we need to know how many he is using
Well for one big 400 amp panel you could use 310.15(B)(6), for two 200 amp panels you cannot. That's where I was going.![]()
Not sure yet. GC wants a price for 400 amp service. So it sounds to me the cheapest way to provide that is a 400 amp meter feeding two 200 amp panels?

That is my MO-- I usually use two 200 amp feed thru panels outside and then feed inside with two 40 cir. panelsNot sure yet. GC wants a price for 400 amp service. So it sounds to me the cheapest way to provide that is a 400 amp meter feeding two 200 amp panels?

I am sorry I am not familiar with what you are talking about
OK so i would go from a 400 amp meter to a 400 amp panel with a main breaker, then to two sub 200 amp panels with main breakers?
