I agree, it is not an NEC issue, but the local POCO here mandates 36" min from nat. gas equipment to the lateral or meter. More for LP.

where in the nec would i find a code on how close can an electrical panel be located near a gas meter ????
The basic rule is not in the NEC; it is in Section 5.7.2.3 of NFPA 54, the NATIONAL FUEL GAS CODE:
Gas meters shall be located at least 3 ft (0.9 m) from sources of ignition.

Welcome to the forum, I'd just likie to add that many jurisdictions I've worked in tell you that if the regulator vents to the atmosphere, then they mandate 10 feet from any OCPD. If it's just the electrical meter, or no venting, it's normally 3 feet. You might want to call the AHJ, because I've seen them use ten feet.
