W/P Junction Box Support

I have a requirement to extend an underground cable. The customer wants to keep the cable junction above ground level. I plan to run the conductors in PVC conduit and use a PVC junction box with a W/P cover for the cable splice. The PVC junction box will be less than a foot above the surface of the ground. Is it necessary to provide support to the junction box other than the two pieces of PVC conduit going into the earth?

Yes. Chris gave you the section. If you change you wiring method to RMC made up wrench tight you do not need additional support.

Yes, that is not a problem or violation.

W/P Junction Box Support

Thanks for the idea. My customer would like a light at the junction point and is now deciding on the color and height of the Gard-N-Post to use. Simple solution and easy to implement.

Actually it is not. There is a bottom plate with kos for your pipe or wire.

I have done this on small conductors , #2 or less . stub up a 4" pvc , run the conductors 8'' out the top , make the splice and roll the conductors back in , install a non glued cap . Is it violation , yes , making a splice in conduit , using unapproved j box . Has it passed inspection, yes many times . The ahj says if you can easily pull the conductors out of the conduit to inspect the splice he will overlook the violations .The reason , j boxes up in the air are very difficult to support so they wont get broken off and they also look like crap .

Steel post in parking lots have a hole cut near the bottom with a plate over it to make the splice between the line in, line out and up to the light . If thats not doing it right then there are quite a few in every city . They also have another splice at top to the light factory pigtails . Some of the large cast iron bases have room for a j box at bottom on top of the concrete pad but they never have a box at top . What is the difference in that and putting a removeable cap on the pipe ? :grin:

Well I really dont if it is a violation and thats not exactly what the ahj said , he said something more like he didnt have a problem with it. Where i got the idea , on the same job, for the inspector to see we had 120 volt yard accent lights that shine up in the plants that came with aprox a 2.5 dia pipe you put in the ground and come up 14 above the ground, The spice is made at the top and pushed back in the pipe and the fixture goes over it . Is the mfg co. in violation ?
