Ring or Ringless?

What is the difference between a meter can with a "ring" or a "ringless" meter can?

A ringed meter socket needs a metal ring to hold the meter in the socket. A ringless one uses the socket cover.

My house has the old ring type. It also has a meter that shows a 15 amp rating??? The service is 60 amp fused.

I see the 15 amp meters from time to time and never understood what that rating was about.

Actually the top one of my two is a ring type.

The meter is held in place with a ring like this one.

As pictured they are both ring-less, since the ring for the ring type is not shown.

So there....

I didn't see the lip for the ring the first time I saw Bob's pics. I am used to seeing the round based sockets being used with rings.

Our POCO gives them away free. If we want to use a different kind we have to get a field engineer to OK it.
