Is having a fire pump on it's own electrical service in a industrial plant a requirement for insurance or some building code ? Is there a monitary advantage with Insurance companies when a fire pump has it's own electrical service ?

Typically when the fire department comes to a building to put the fire out, they shut the electric service off. If the fire pump was on the main building service then it would be shut off with everything else. Having the pump isolated allows the department to shut everything off outside the building but keep the fire pump on. Pretty sure that is in the NFPA somewhere. Not to mention that it just makes sense.

Take a look at 695.3(C), a new section in the 2011 code. The code recognized that it would be almost impossible to comply with the previous rules in large "campus" type installations so this section was added.
