to be compliant a #12 will do however you will have about a 6 volt drop-- probably fine but #10 wouldn't hurt

You do realize that Hayward pumps are notoriously troublesome with Hayward pumps.... A dp 20 amp gfci should work

You still cannot have the heater on a 30 amp circuit

210.23 Permissible Loads, Multiple-Outlet Branch Circuits.
In no case shall the load exceed the branch-circuit
ampere rating. A branch circuit supplying two or more outlets
or receptacles shall supply only the loads specified
according to its size as specified in 210.23(A) through (D)
and as summarized in 210.24 and Table 210.24.
(A) 15- and 20-Ampere Branch Circuits. A 15- or
20-ampere branch circuit shall be permitted to supply
lighting units or other utilization equipment, or a combination
of both, and shall comply with 210.23(A)(1) and (A)(2).

(B) 30-Ampere Branch Circuits. A 30-ampere branch circuit
shall be permitted to supply fixed lighting units with
heavy-duty lampholders in other than a dwelling unit(s) or
utilization equipment in any occupancy. A rating of any one
cord-and-plug-connected utilization equipment shall not
exceed 80 percent of the branch-circuit ampere rating.

How are the pump and propane heater NOT utilization equipment as per 210.23(B)? :?

So you are saying that a pump cannot be on a 30 amp breaker? If so look at 430.52---Motors are a different animal. Still not sure of what you are asking. I think the pump and heater are utilization equipment but pumps have an article unto themselves. The heater does not get permission in 210.23(B) as far as I can tell.

Okay, I'm totally confused. It looks like 210.23(B) permits more than one utilization equipment as long as none of them exceed 80% of the circuit rating (30 amps). Are you saying that the 250% allowed for in-rush (12 x 2.5 = 30) applies to this limit?

Sounds like this application is out of the normal for a pool propane heater and filter pump. I did some quick checking and found that it is an option to tap power from the time clock or the switch. The switch I presume would replace the recepticle and become the disconnect. Then hard wire from there. Don't know if this is an option for your application.

I wire these pumps all the time on a 20A circuit and even wire in the heater on the same circuit with no problems. They typically pull around 15A on 120V, 7 or 8 on 240V.
