Car charger

Hello - I was looking at installing an outside car charger that is hardwired (chargepoint 25) it will be mounted on the side of the house. I’m not sure if I can come into the back of it or come in with pipe. Is 8 Romex rated for outside in pipe? Thanks

Romex is not rated for any exterior use. Inside conduit outdoors is still outdoors.

Having said that, I would use it in a rear-entrance use, like an AC disconnect.

There is no issue with entering the back of a charger, however if the charger is off the wall a bit then it technically could be an issue based on what :Larry stated

NM can come into its back though reading through the installation manual makes me think they didn't design it to do that. A 1-1/8" hole saw should take care of that, but probably at your own risk. But if you pipe/sleeve into it on the surface, you'll need UF or individual conductors.

If the exterior conduit run is a must, I would use individual conductors and either a J-box to NM, or a raceway all the way to the source.

Conduit sizing treats a cable as a single conductor with a diameter equal to the major (larger) dimension of that cable, which is huge for UF.

I am curious how something mounted on the exterior of a building is not "outside", and anything outside would appear to be by definition a wet location where NM is prohibited.

Because it's still inside a j box and only the inside of an outside conduit is considered by code to be a wet location. That is also why we can install breakers in an outside panel. And I believe reason this conundrum exists is because a group of hand wringing ninnies was all upset about romex being run in conduit across someone's front porch and forced a code changed.
