Buried electrical outlet - Moen Shower

Moen has (homedepot ad, so rather popular now) an electronic /wifi app controlled shower. I know, stop laughing- but one of the photos they show of the install is here-
There's an AC outlet (with face plate!) behind the shower.

I'm really struggling here to understand how this could even get close to passing code, unless the whole back end is (where the valves are) accessible via removable panel.

What am I missing?

Thanks (and no, I'm not putting one in, but they are cool and pretty amazing... had one in a 5-star hotel while traveling for business)

The install instructions require an access panel. To their credit, they even specify the size and exact placement of all components. One of those deals where the sparky and the plumber better read and plan carefully.

Well, it does come with a 30' cord, so there's no reason to do it as in that pic if it would be inaccessible.

Sidenote: I wonder why they didn't use the matching plate to the box?

Just a mock up. Notice that there isn't even any wiring going to the box.

Per instructions there has to be an access panel so nothing illegal about it. My only problem is that it gives the Millennials something else to use their cell phones for. 😖

It's one of those new wireless receptacles. :p

So what is the Black wire going through the mock up wall on the right?

My guess is there is a control module inside the shower stall, for anyone that doesn't feel they must turn this on or make adjustment with their phone.

More pictures are available to the right in the Moen link. In one you can see me taking a shower and you can see the control that that wire goes to. o_O

Ummm...

I’ll pass. Not quite that interested...😖

The cell phone control of the shower is ridiculous, but not the temperature control. When I remodeled my shower I put in a manually controlled temperature value. I can set the shower temperature, turn on the water, and walk away. The temp will stay exactly right no matter how many toilets are flushed. No holding your hand in the water while playing with the valve trying to get the temperature right. I love it.

So, app is downloaded to your phone, wife's phone - and we will throw in a teenage kid.

And you are in the shower singing away, and somebody connects up and hits the full cold button.

Sorry, it took me that long to quit laughing
Bet you didn't know you could hit that high a note - did you?

I love walking through a store and seeing what Homer has mocked up! Some get downright dangerous though, they had a display showing how the plug in polarity checkers work. One shown hot and ground reversed! This display was 120 volts, metal handy boxes mounted on plywood. No gfi protection, on a table next to a metal rack. Yes, the box was hot! Told the manager, he blew me off, I called someone at corporate maintenance that I knew, they had me unplug it, and their safety department had a conference call with the manager!

Tends to keep showers short and to the point-- saves hot water! :)
