Haven't used one on a reel like that since I was starting out and quickly learned what a PITA the reel is.

Or push it through 1/2" emt and have your worse pipe bender have at it...a bunch of really really bad 3 points and shepard hooks will do it. Of course bend pipe w/the tape in it...then pull it out.
I like "just get a new one" but if i couldnt spare a trip, this works.

Take a round file and apply it to the edges of each slot. Most of the time the edges are so sharp it'll start peeling off some of the fishtape.

The best way is not to pull at a steep angle against a fitting throat, and curl it in the first place.

A quick fix, if the problem is minor, is to pull it across your knee.
