Does anyone have a 2002 NEC code book? Question: Were pool filter motors required to be GFI protected on the 2002. I only saved my back to 2005.

I think so but can you site article.

You can read many code editions online (www.nfpa.com).

I'm not finding anything that says that hard-wired motors need GFCIs for permanent pools. However 680.22(A)(5) says "receptacles that supply pool pump motors that are rated 15 or 20 amp 120 volt through 240 volt single phase shall be provided with GFCI protection" (transcribed by me).

Do you mean nfpa.org

2002 NEC said:
680.22 Area Lighting, Receptacles, and Equipment....
(5) GFCI Protection. All 125-volt receptacles located
within 6.0 m (20 ft) of the inside walls of a pool or fountain
shall be protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter. Receptacles
that supply pool pump motors and that are rated
15 or 20 amperes, 120 volt through 240 volts, single phase,
shall be provided with GFCI protection.

III. Storable Pools
680.30 General. Electrical installations at storable pools
shall comply with the provisions of Part I and Part III of
this article.
680.31 Pumps. A cord-connected pool filter pump shall
incorporate an approved system of double insulation or its
equivalent and shall be provided with means for grounding
only the internal and nonaccessible non–current-carrying
metal parts of the appliance.
The means for grounding shall be an equipment
grounding conductor run with the power-supply conductors
in the flexible cord that is properly terminated in a
grounding-type attachment plug having a fixed grounding
contact member.
680.32 Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters Required.
All electrical equipment, including power-supply cords,
used with storable pools shall be protected by ground-fault
circuit interrupters.

Note that under the 2020 NEC GFCI will need to be added when a pump motor is replaced on an installation that did not originally need it when installed. 680.21(D) (new).
Staring to see more retroactive stuff in the NEC.

I just checked --the 2011 nec was the first time gfci was required for pumps whether cord connected or not
My 2005 code book article 680.22[5] states receptacles that supply pool pump motors shall be provided with GFIC protection

Yes I believe I stated that receptacles needed gfci but in 2011 even if there is no receptacle (direct wired) gfci is needed
