Hello,

I have a question, what are the permitted uses for Type A PVC conduit? I've been reviewing article 352, but it only refers to SCH 40 and SCH 80 pvc conduits, Type A is mentioned later in the tables in chapter 9 and in appendix C, but only there is it mentioned.

I will appreciate if somebody can tell me more about where can i use this conduit, or if this conduit has the same uses of the PVC conduit SCH 40.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Regards,

According to this document type A is listed for use with concrete encasement along with type EB.

Type EB and A conduit and fittings
The Type EB and Type A rigid PVC conduit and fittings mentioned in 1.1.1 are intended for use at 50°C (122°F) and lower ambient temperatures. Type A rigid PVC conduit and fittings are intended for use with 75°C (167°F) wiring. Type A and Type EB rigid PVC conduit and fittings, where encased in concrete in trenches outside of buildings, may be used with 90°C (194°F) wiring.

Type EB (encased burial) rigid PVC conduit is intended for encasement in concrete in trenches outside of buildings. Type A rigid PVC conduit is intended for encasement in concrete in any location.

I’ve used type EB a lot on the utility side, along with schedule 40 & 80 as most here have..

I don’t believe I have ever laid eyes on a stick of type A...
Hi,

Interesting, puting in context, here in Costa Rica, before adopting the NEC 2008 as the official version of the "national electrical code", we had been using a kind of local manufactured conduit PVC, tha was adapted to the EMT connectors (i know that it is a violation, in fact, mike holt used that connection in one of his figures as an example). Now the people in Costa Rica is using more the Type A for residential (thanks to a licences otorgued by the local jurisdiction ( as exception)) but just for single family dwellings, in Multi-family dwelings or other uses is not permitted (exept its own permitted use).

Regards,

See the Ul white book RIGID NONMETALLIC PVC CONDUIT (DZYR)

Type A – Can be installed with its entire length in concrete in any underground location.
Type EB – can be installed with its entire length in concrete in trenches out-side of buildings.
