I would rather not leave it to the professionals

I know we talked about this before. This is what I would like to avoid on a job. I want to make a cord up to go from a 30A 4 wire dryer receptacle to a cord cap that the cord from 240V floor sander can mate with. My recollection is that they use a twist lock and probably a L10-30. Would that be a good gamble to make before the floor guys show up?

It seems that L6-20 is common:

Yes, L6. My assumed L10 is non-grounding.

So I would say L6-20 for smaller machines and L6-30 for the 7.5hp beasts that you have to take the motor off to transport.

Complete with clips....

If you look at the parts/wiring diagram for these machines they don't even show a plug on the end of the 100' cord. I'm surprised they don't come from the factory with clips, but then they probaby wouldn't get the machine listed.

Not to be a party pooper but a few years ago at a continuing class was told not even a licensed electrician can not make up say a 3' cord with a 125 volt male plug for a garbage disposal. Must purchase think it was called a listed cord set. I wish that I had a dollar for every 120 to 480 volt 15 to 60 amp extension cords during my 50 years as a sparky. Companies that I worked for never purchased extension cords.

What do they do when the client has all gas appliances? The only thing on 240 in my house is the A/C and it's hard-wired.

99% of the time the dryers are electric. Ranges may vary from gas to electric depending on whether gas is available. You don't see propane dryers around here

Don't believe everything you hear. If that were true there would be no plugs available.

Then again wasn't there a topic a little while ago about cords with molded plugs and /or caps being the only legal way in California?

Then consider that was in California... 🙄

The floor guys always ignore your outlets and pull out a long cord with jaw clips...straight to the lugs...problem solved.
