Conduit required for church

Do churches require conduit ? I used to think that if a building can seat 125 people, it requires conduit. But the elec inspector says I can use Romex in this particular church remodel job. He said Romex is allowed as long as it is covered with 1/2 drywall, a one hour fire rating. I thought conduit ( or MC) was required in any building like this.
Any feedback is appreciated.

It doesn't necessarily need to be conduit but there are specific wiring methods and that is not in all areas of the Church. Call your inspector and make a date to jointly read article 518.

The specific sections are 518.4 (A), (B) and (C).

Check 518. For the most part it does require a more protected form of wireing, however there are spaces that will permit type NM as long as it falls within these specific criteria.
