Code how far power receptacle penetrates faceplate

Is there a code that specifies the minimum distance a power receptacle penetrates a faceplate? These receptacles penetrate the faceplate more than a 1/4". I would like to flush mount them or only have them penetrate slightly. Before doing so, I wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking code, NEC, UL, etc.. Is the reason it sticks out so far to prevent arching and if I flush mount the face of the receptacle, will it arc to the metal faceplate?

I'm installing them in a metal chase per attachments. Issue is that the chase goes through a penetration in the counter and the device is sticking out too far and interfering with the counter. Going forward I'd like to have the face of the power outlet inline with the duplex above. Just want to make sure I'm not violating any codes but per NEC, it only needs to project a minimum of 0.015 in. so I should be ok doing so.

I would think that recessing it to match the duplex is okay. Since you're bolted to the panel, shimming should be easy.

An alternative approach if you determine that the receptacle needs to protrude the full amount would be to use captive nuts on the receptacles. Then the mounting screws could be loose while inserting the column, the receptacle temporarily pushed back, and tightened after above the bench top.
