Hello everyone, I work for an local government agency (county govt) at a water reclamation facility, I have my master license and have 20 years in trade, 12 years industrial electrical construction and 8 years as electric shop management. My question is do I need a permit to add a circuit in an existing building? Or if I was to be replacing a Control Panel at a metering station that has a 120v metering can provided by power co.? I always though local government bodies were exempt from having to pull permits and get inspections for small electric jobs like this. I can understand if I was doing a ground up type job or a complete MCC replacement. What are you thoughts and experiences? Im looking it up in NEC under enforcements, but nothing really stands out in the 2014. Thanks in advance.

That type of thing is not covered by the NEC. You will have to look to your local rules. Some areas require permits for work in government facilities and others do not.

In most cases government entities exempt themselves from basically all the laws the rest of us have to abide by. However usually they have some kind of internal rule that requires them to abide by such things as the national electrical code.

Federal govt is not subject to state rules
Local gov't is under our state ahj, permits and inspections required, in house electricians don't have be licensed if full time employee of property owner.

In Illinois, public schools are not under the permit and inspection process of the local building department. They get their permits from the Regional Office of Education.
