In hospital there are typically 3 branches: life safety, equipment branch, critical branch.

I know if emergency generator nec section 700 is allowed to load shed.

Does nec 2017 allow or not allow load shed for hospital generator? Does anyone know? I don’t see it in NEC 2017 section 517

You cannot shed any loads that are required to be supplied by the generator. You can only shed "optional" loads.

I really dont follow. So can one load shed critical branch, life safety branch or equipment branch of generator such as AHUs and fire smoke dampers? What is required loads and what is optional loads? NEC 2017 go into that for hospitals

Only Equipment Branch loads can be shed.

Are those loads required to be supplied by emergency power? The NEC is not the place to look for this type of information.

No benefit comes from shedding anything essential.

A hospital needs all of its life safety, critical, and equipment power.

Size the generator to handle everything deemed essential and move on.
