Using the new requirement now allows us to use that equipment as pur service with gecs comimg off that gear
Then we can locate our sub panel anywhere that works. Our state of wash used to limit the length of unfused conductors to 15 inside the structure. Now if you use a fused disconnect or breaker outside you can run any length you need to the sub
Correct. Just havent done a new construction in a good long while.

Having a conversation with yourself? 😯 Some people say talking to one's self is a sign of genius, and others say you should see a shrink!😆

But actually as much as I hate the new requirement, it is nice to have (although forced) the flexibility to put your panel anywhere inside. I'm doing a duplex now and it's my first project requiring the outdoor disco.

Before the new 2020 code. For the duplex the disconnects would have usually been required any way 230.72

I have run a set of service entrance conductors to each unit, and have a main breaker service panel in each unit, or had a common area with both panels there. There may be some variation in the term "duplex"
I'm still a little perplexed. Do you mean if the meter(s) are right outside behind the meter(s) you didn't put a disco outside.
I'm curious because I've seen them done so many different ways, I'm not sure they're all code compliant.

230.40 exception #1 allows a set of service conductors to each occupancy, and then if you look carefully at the language in 230.70-71, those service disconnects do not need to be grouped. So you can have meters outside and ungrounded panels inside. You would still be restricted to the the limited length of service conductors once inside.

Is this why I see a lot of duplexes with one disco outside and one who knows where inside? I just seen a commercial garage like that also a boat place like that. Both hat 320 meters with one 200 amp disco outside the other insiside. I think what you're telling me is that that was code compliant. Is that right?

If there are multiple occupancies (NEC doesn't define that term, you would have to look at your local laws and definitions) then that opens the door to the possibility of non grouped service disconnects. If you have an NEC handbook, take a look at some of their exhibits in 230.

I always get better answers when i talk to myself sometimes. Lol
