Bypass light plug on cooler

This is a meat cooler in a super market. There's one fluorescent light underneath each of the two shelves. Few weeks ago I did a service call on this meat cooler because the plug was burnt and it stunk when plugged in. So I got the model number I disconnected the plugs I even got in contact with the company for the right parts.
Now weeks later I was at that same job site for something else and my boss wanted me to bypass the plug that powers up the light . Put some wire nuts in there and stuff the wire in the back of the unit. These plugs are air tight for a reason. Besides telling my boss I want to hug him , rig it himself if he wants to, what can I say professionally that he can't argue with me about. Is there a code or something that says you can't do things like this.

What is the issue if you bypass the plug? I presume water ingress through the hole; is there another safety issue?

IMHO you are quite right not to blindly jerry rig this, but if you could reliably seal the hole would you be comfortable bypassing the plug?

Try NEC section 110.3B.The cooler is listed utilization equipment. The NEC applies to the premise wiring to it. If you modify the equipment, that needs to be done per the product standard.

I think "i want to hug him" has some comedic effect. I laughed when I read your post knowing the spirit in which it was meant.
I think its better than whatever you wrote originally.

I agree. I wouldn't jerry rig it. Seems like a good lawsuit if something were to happen. Either oem parts or make them sign a waiver saying it's on them.

Gotta. I'd misread the situation as being requested to make the unit functional without the lights, not make the lights functional without the plug.
