Old can light

I have an old can light housing where the wire hooks are in the top of the housing. I need to mount a updated trim. Is the best option to remove the old housing and put in a remodel can light or is there anyway to add the clips that are in new can light housings? See pictures.

There are Clips available on Amazon. Screw one into each side about 1 inch up from the bottom

I also have an old Indian trick.

Use two truss head screws on each side, about 1 inch apart. Don't screw them all the way in. Leave them sticking out about 1/4 inch.

Use the space between them for the torsion springs

Done the screw thing before, They also make trims that tighten when twisted in, they have 3 protruding flanges

I would check the diameter of the hole and see if a canless LED wafer will fit. If so, I'd remove the wingnut, pull out the can, and wire the new light with or without the original light's J-box, depending on what I find up there.

Yes, some LED trims come with “friction fit clips” if you have a can that does not have the flanges for spring clips or tabs for standard springs.
Just push the trim up and the friction clips grab the edge of the can.

I agree. Most LED trims have friction clips as standard or at least an option to use them.
